The Colour Room’s superstar stylist, Leah Walton, has been named 2011 Young Hairdresser of the Year at the Clothes Show Live in Birmingham, beating twenty finalists to take the prestigious title in a high-pressure, nail-biting live final.
The talented young hairdressers in the final had already impressed judges with a photographic entry and, on the day, had just 45 minutes to recreate their image live on stage in front of a capacity audience and an expert panel of judges comprising Errol Douglas, MBE, Leo Bancroft, Mark Woolley, Michelle Royle of Your Hair magazine and HJi web editor, Kate Woods
After two live shows, the final six were chosen as: Terri Lowe, Lisa Shepherd; Abigail Sheldon, Royston Blythe; Jonathan Andrew, Cox McMillan; Leah Walton, The Colour Room; Rachelle Summerson-Wright, Janet Maitland and Joshua Goldsworthy, Goldsworthy’s.
The finalists then presented their models in front of a 4,000-strong audience in the huge Clothes Show Fashion Theatre, before Leah was announced as winner.
The win was all the sweeter for Leah as this was her third time entering the competition, having been runner-up in 2008 and finalist in 2009. Leah said “I can’t begin to tell you how amazing it feels to have won this title. Having got so far in the competition twice before, but never quite winning, this year I was determined to learn from my experience and ensure the look I created would tick all the boxes as far as the judges were concerned. I have gone out of my comfort zone, creating a graphic cut on stage, and have pushed the boundaries with the clothes styling and whole look of my model, and I am thrilled that this has paid off.”
Leah, who is proof of the old adage if at first you don’t succeed, try, try again, added “I could not have asked for a better end to the most amazing year of my life, and I would like to say a huge thank you to my bosses, Sean and Claire, whose support and encouragement has meant everything to me.”
Leah’s mentor, Sean Tetlow, co-owner of The Colour Room, said “Having experienced a phenomenal year as a member of the 2011 F.A.M.E. Team, winning 2011 Young Hairdresser of the Year is absolutely the icing on the cake for Leah and will guarantee that the pace and momentum of her career and her achievements will continue with gusto into 2012 and beyond! Claire and I are immensely proud of her as are all of Leah’s adoring clients.”
As part of her prize, Leah can now look forward to front cover photo-shoots for Your Hair Magazine and Hairdressers Journal International, as well as all the industry recognition and PR opportunities that are sure to come her way.
Sean Tetlow, owner and Creative Director of The Colour Room has every reason to celebrate this week after scooping the title of REGIONAL HAIRDRESSER OF THE YEAR in the BRITISH HAIRDRESSING AWARDS. Sean received his award from celebrity host , Jonathan Ross, at the glittering awards ceremony at The Grosvenor House Hotel in London on Monday night. Sean’s partner, Claire and the rest of the team were there to support Sean and share in the celebrations.
The prestigious win confirms Sean is considered by an esteemed panel of judges to be the best hairdresser in a huge expanse of the UK spanning south Manchester and Cheshire, right down to the south Midlands. To win the award, which was judged by the cream of British hairdressing as well as top trade and consumer journalists and beauty editors, Sean had to submit eight photographic images that showcase his creative and technical hairdressing expertise as well as his interpretation of international fashion and beauty trends. Sean said “I have been working towards winning this award for the past seven years. I have been finalised for the award three times before, so to win this year is a huge thrill and I am delighted to put Stockport and The Colour Room firmly on the map as a leading light in British hairdressing.”
Celebrating Sean’s undoubtable creative and technical hairdressing expertise, this award perfectly compliments The Colour Room’s win of the Customer Care Award in the British Hairdressing Business awards in September, proving that The Colour Room provides world class hairdressing and world class customer care.

It must be true, because renowned Sunday Times Style magazine journalist, Shane Watsons says so: This is becoming the decade of stress and to combat stress, we should “Go to the hairdresser more. Having people fiddle with your hair is so relaxing that your cares melt away.” How true. And we promise to do more than just “fiddle”! Imagine yourself sinking back into the chair as your hair is lovingly shampooed with the highest quality cleansers, and then you drift away as your scalp is gently but firmly massaged as your hair benefits from a deep conditioning treatment that leaves it like silk. A fabulous blow-dry, a gorgeous latte, some you-time with a glossy mag. You leave the salon looking and feeling fab! Don’t wait until you need a hair cut or colour to treat yourself. A £22.00 blow dry at The Colour Room can tick all the boxes of indulgence, relaxation and the confidence of knowing your hair looks amazing.

Misha B, Amelia Lilly, Sophie and Two Shoes all enjoyed Leah Walton’s amazing hairdressing skills for the M&S Christmas TV commercial featuring the X Factor finalists.
